An Indian Parliamentary Delegation (IPD) led by Shri Om Birla, Hon’ble Speaker Lok Sabha and comprising of Shri Harivansh, Hon’ble Deputy Chairman, Rajya Sabha attended the Seventh G-20 Parliamentary Speakers’ Summit in Rome, Italy on 7-8 October 2021. The Summit adopted a Joint Statement, covering the deliberations.

In his intervention on the theme Response to the Social and Employment Crisis caused by the Pandemic, Hon’ble Speaker elaborated upon India’s initiatives for saving lives and livelihoods during the pandemic. He highlighted that Parliament of India discharged its democratic duties during the COVID-19 Pandemic and passed four historic labour laws with the objective of enhancing employment generation and ensuring wage and job security for Indian citizens. During the Keynote speech on the theme Rebooting Economic Growth in terms of Social and Environmental Sustainability, Hon’ble Speaker emphasized that climate change & global warming are the biggest challenges before the humanity for building a sustainable world. We need to find a solution to ensure sustainable economic development.

Hon’ble Deputy Chairman Rajya Sabha made an intervention on the theme Sustainability and Food Security after the Pandemic. He highlighted India’s initiatives to address food security in a comprehensive manner by promoting sustainable agriculture, protecting biodiversity along with securing better health outcomes.

On the sidelines, the IPD met HE Rt. Hon’ble Sir Lindsay Hoyle, Speaker of House of Commons, UK; HE Dr. Reiner Haseloff, President of Bundesrat, Germany; HE Dr. Jan Anthonie Bruijn, President of the Senate of Netherlands; HE Ms. Maria Elisa Alberti Casellati, President, of the Italian Senate; HE Ms. Puan Maharani, Speaker of the House of Representative, Indonesia and HE Ms. Nosiviwe Mapisa Nqakula, Speaker of the National Assembly, South Africa. During the meetings, the dignitaries discussed a wide range of issues of mutual interests, including ways to enhance Parliamentary exchanges.

On the evening of the 8 October 2021, the IPD interacts with the members of the Italy-India Parliamentary Friendship Group.
