THE PROCESS TO ELECT NEW PRESIDENT OF IPU COMMENCES
CANDIDATES FROM PORTUGAL; PAKISTAN; UZBEKISTAN; AND CANADA ARE IN THE FRAY FOR ELECTION TO IPU PRESIDENT
New Delhi, 1 November 2020: Lok Sabha Speaker Shri Om Birla, who is leading an Indian Parliamentary Delegation to the 206th Session of the Governing Council of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) from 1 to 4 November 2020, participated in its Extraordinary virtual Session today. Smt. Poonamben Hematbhai Maadam, Member of Parliament, Lok Sabha and Shri Swapan Dasgupta, Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha are also participating in the Virtual Session.
A total of 144 of Parliaments are participating in the Session.
The main Agenda item of the Virtual Session pertains to the election of the new President of IPU for the term 2020-23. The process of election to the post of IPU President commenced today. The election will be completed in a window of 24 hours, beginning at 19.30 pm today. Each country has 3 votes in the Presidency collegium provided one delegate is a woman.
Mr. Duarte Pacheco from Portugal; Mr. Muhammad Sanjrani from Pakistan; Mr. Akmal Saidov from Uzbekistan; and Ms. Salma Ataullahjan from Canada are contesting the election to the post of IPU President.
Today’s proceedings started with the Opening Remarks of the Acting President of the IPU. Apart from the election of President, the Governing Council will also consider administrative matters including financial results of IPU, its budget and a host of other matters.
The Governing Council is the main policy-making body of the IPU which is inter-alia mandated to elect the new President of IPU.
