WOMAN EMPOWERMENT IS CRUCIAL FOR BUILDING NEW INDIA: LOK SABHA SPEAKER

 

New Delhi 14 June 2020: 'Women Empowerment and the safety and education of girls are among the fundamental requirements of building New India. There is an urgent need for  collective efforts towards the health, personal hygiene, education and nutrition of women and young girls. Only then will women be able to contribute to social progress.' Lok Sabha Speaker Shri Om Birla made these observations while inaugurating Indian Radio-logical and Imaging Association (IRIA)’s ‘Raksha’ Programme.    

 

Addressing members of IRIA from all over the country, on a digital platform from his New Delhi residence, Shri Birla said that doctors are considered the living embodiment of God and there is nothing comparable to the contribution of doctors towards the care of patients and saving lives. He said, that the selfless service displayed by doctors, often by putting their own lives in danger, in these tough times of Corona virus is commendable, and for this the nation remains ever grateful.   

 

Shri Birla appreciated the exemplary work done by IRIA through the Raksha Program towards the empowerment of Women and young girls. He said that there is a critical need for awareness among women about personal hygiene and community health along with diseases like cervical cancer and breast cancer. He hoped that the 'Raksha' Program would ensure the same, and make efforts so that women and their families are protected from serious illnesses.  

 

Shri Birla said that foetal sex determination and female foeticide are a social curse. He lauded the fact the elimination of such practices is among the commendable goals of the IRIA. He emphasized that it is our collective responsibility that our daughters are given adequate opportunities for growth and development. He noted that the Adolescent Kit being distributed under the program to young girls would help to encourage girls’ education. He further said that the installation of sanitary pad vending machines in schools by the association will also help in reducing school dropout rates after a certain age among girls.             

 

He said that personal participation in community improvement programs has its own importance keeping in mind the huge population of the nation. Every segment of society must come forward to contribute towards such programs of social improvement. Only by doing so, we shall be able to achieve our goal of public welfare. 

 

Earlier, in his welcome address to Shri Birla, IRIA National President Dr. Deepak Patkar said IRIA is seeking to protect the rights of women and girls through the 'Raksha' Program. The program was also addressed by the outgoing president of the Institution Dr. Hemant Patel and the newly elected President Dr. C. Amarnath. The proceedings were conducted by Dr. Neha Dive from Udaipur.

 

Two Lakh Kits will be distributed

 

The National Convener and President of the Raksha Program Dr. Sangeeta Saxena said that under the program more than two lakh women and girls kits would be distributed. This kit would ensure health, personal hygiene, and nutrition. Apart from this the Institution has prepared videos in local languages for the dissemination of information about various diseases in order to spread awareness.
