THE FOURTH SOUTH ASIAN SPEAKERS' SUMMIT ON ACHIEVING SDGS CONCLUDES

Camp Office Male (Maldives), 02 September 2019: The Indian Parliamentary Delegation led by Hon'ble Speaker, Lok Sabha, Shri Om Birla today resumed their participation in the Sessions of the Summit for the second day. Shri Harivansh, Hon'ble Deputy Chairman, Rajya Sabha attended the third session of the Summit, namely, on ' Catalyzing the global agenda on climate change – overcoming challenges and utilizing opportunities to strengthen the regional agenda for delivering on the Paris Agreement'. After the conclusion of the third session of the Summit, the draft Male declaration was made available for the consideration of the Speakers and Presiding officers of Parliament. Subsequently, a closed door Roundtable Meeting was held to finalise the Draft Declaration based on the confabulations held during the Summit. The Indian Delegation proposed several additions and amendments to the draft which were accepted unanimously. The Summit, thereafter, concluded with a Vote of Thanks by the Hon’ble Speaker, Lok Sabha on behalf of all participating Parliaments to the Speaker of Peoples' Majlis of Maldives , Government of Maldives, IPU and all agencies involved in organising the Summit. The Indian Delegation also had a meeting with the Bhutanese Delegation today. At the outset, the Bhutanese Speaker in a very emotive gesture requested for observing a minute's silence in the memory of Smt. Sushma Swaraj, and Shri Arun Jaitley. Wide ranging talks were thereafter held during the meeting. The Bhutanese Speaker recalled with fondness the visit of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, to Bhutan and his affectionate interaction with the students and children. India offered capacity building assistance to the Bhutanese side both for their Parliamentarians and Parliamentary Staff. He also expressed his sincere gratitude to Hon'ble Speaker for sending two senior officers of Lok Sabha Secretariat for training the MPs of Parliament of Bhutan recently. He effusively admitted that the said training did wonders and the members were now contributing more fruitfully and professionally in their respective parliamentary committees.
