PARLIAMENTARIANS PAY FLORAL TRIBUTES TO SHRI SOMNATH CHATTERJEE

New Delhi, 25 July 2019: Lok Sabha Speaker Shri Om Birla; Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Shri Ghulam Nabi Azad; Deputy Chairman Rajya Sabha Shri Harivansh; Minister of State (Independent Charge) in the Ministry of Culture and Tourism Shri Prahalad Singh Patel; Members of Parliament and former Members of Parliament paid floral tributes at the portrait of Shri Somnath Chatterjee in the Central Hall of Parliament House on his birth anniversary today. The Secretary-General of Lok Sabha Smt. Snehlata Shrivastava and officers of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha Secretariats also paid floral tributes. Shri Chatterjee was a multifaceted personality with varied interests that ranged from education and sports to constitutional studies. He was a people’s man in every sense of the term. He combined an unwavering commitment to the basic principles and values of India’s democracy with a rare ability to transcend political divides. Member of the Lok Sabha since 1971, Shri Somnath Chatterjee has been a role model for Parliamentarians. A highly accomplished lawyer, a trade unionist, an articulate and effective Parliamentarian, a leader of stature, and later the Speaker of the world’s largest democracy, he inspired believers in democracy across the world. Throughout his public life, he had been infusing a sense of respect among the people in the institutions of democracy and thereby sustaining the people’s faith in them. Shri Chatterjee remained Lok Sabha Speaker from 04 June 2004 to 31 May 2009.
