Singapore; 26 April, 2022: Indian Parliamentary Delegation led by Lok Sabha Speaker Shri Om Birla held a bilateral meeting with Emirates Senior Minister of Singapore Mr. Goh Chok Tong, today, on the sixth day of its South East Asia tour.

Speaking on the occasion, Shri Birla underlined the age-old friendly relations between India and Singapore and said that the relations between the two countries are getting strengthened consistently on the foundation of strong people-to-people contacts and mutual interests.

Emphasizing that there is a need for constant dialogue between the parliaments of the two countries to further strengthen the bilateral ties, Shri Birla said that sharing best practices of each other's parliaments will help in capacity building of both the legislatures. Stressing on parliamentary diplomacy, Shri Birla said that formation of a Parliamentary Friendship Group is being considered to promote bilateral visits of delegations between the two parliaments. Regular dialogue between the parliaments of democratic countries is essential to strengthen democracy all over the world, said Shri Birla.

Mentioning about the close and strong economic-trade relationship between India and Singapore, Shri Birla said that FDI and bilateral trade are increasing continuously due to the efforts of both the countries. He further said that the India-Singapore Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement is an important milestone for in the direction of promoting bilateral business interests.

Referring to the large number of Indians in Singapore and their contribution to economic prosperity of Singapore, Shri Birla expressed hope that Singapore will continue to be a convenient place for people of Indian origin in the future as well.

On the emerging new economic opportunities in India, Shri Birla said that there are ample opportunities for foreign companies to work in India and India is looking forward to wider cooperation with Singapore in areas such as supply chains, infrastructure, fintech, renewable energy, smart cities, information technology, start-ups and research. He further said that there are also ample opportunities for cooperation in the field of defense and technology and Singapore companies and entrepreneurs should take advantage of this opportunity.

At the end, Shri Birla appreciated the positive role played by Singapore in promoting ASEAN-India parternship.
