New Delhi, 27 November 2019: Lok Sabha Speaker Shri Om Birla; Deputy Chairman Rajya Sabha Shri Harivansh and Former Deputy Prime Minister Shri L. K. Advani paid floral tributes at the portrait of former Lok Sabha Speaker, Shri G. V. Mavalankar, in the Central Hall of Parliament House, on his Birth Anniversary today. Several Union Ministers, Members of Parliament former Members of Parliament and Secretary-General of Lok Sabha, Smt. Snehlata Shrivastava also paid the tributes to Shri G. V. Mavalankar. A booklet containing the Profile of Shri G.V. Mavalankar, brought out in Hindi and English by the Lok Sabha Secretariat, was presented to the dignitaries. A veteran freedom fighter with rich parliamentary experience and commendable knowledge of parliamentary practices and procedures, Shri G.V. Mavalankar began his legislative career in 1937 in the then Bombay Legislative Assembly, where he was elected the Speaker. He remained in that Office till 1946. Later, Shri Mavalankar was elected member and the President of the Sixth Central Legislative Assembly in January 1946. He remained the Speaker of the Central Legislative Assembly till the mid-night of 14-15 August 1947 and presided over the Constituent Assembly (Legislative) from 17 November 1949. With the adoption of the Constitution of free India on 26 November 1949, Shri Mavalankar became the Speaker of the Provisional Parliament and continued in office till the First Lok Sabha was constituted. Shri Mavalankar was elected as the Speaker of the First Lok Sabha on 15 May 1952 and remained in Office till his demise on 27 February 1956.
