An Indian Parliamentary Delegation led by Lok Sabha Speaker Shri Om Birla is presently attending the 141st assembly of Inter Parliamentary Union being held in Belgrade, Serbia.
During the day, Shri Birla participated in the ‘Speaker’s Dialogue on Governance’, a high level IPU platform to exchange political ideas. He delivered a statement at the break-out Session of the Speakers’ Dialogue on Development and Economy. Highlighting India’s growth story and its achievements with respect to various crucial economic indicators, Shri Birla effectively underlined Indian perspective on the issues of Development and Economy. Dr. Shashi Tharoor, MP was also invited to be a panelist on the second break-out Session of the Speaker’s Dialogue on Security. After the Round table, an Outcome Document was prepared to transmit the same for the consideration of the Assembly.
The proceedings of the Assembly commenced with the debate of the participating countries on the emergency item on Climate Change which was proposed by India. A number of countries namely, Uganda, Bhutan, Fiji, Chile, Bangladesh, Brazil etc. participated in the debate and applauded India’s initiative to bring a resolution on Climate Change as an emergency item. Concluding the debate, Dr. Shashi Tharoor,MP and member of Indian Delegation highlighted the urgent need and rationale for India’s proposal on climate change. Urging the developed countries to take a demonstrable lead in combating climate change, he called for collective global action to face the challenge of Climate Change.
On the sidelines of the Assembly, Shri Birla also met his counterpart from the Parliament of Iran. The dignitaries discussed bilateral and multilateral issues of mutual interest.
Sh. Ram Kumar Verma, MP; Ms. Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, MP; and Shri Sasmit Patra, MP attended the special segment of the Assembly to mark the 130th Anniversary of the IPU.
Dr. Bhartiben Dhirubhai Shyal, MP attended the Meeting of the IPU Advisory Group on Health. The Standing Committee on Peace and International Security organized a panel discussion on the follow up of IPU’s earlier Resolution on ‘A nuclear weapon-free world’.
Ms. Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, MP attended the panel discussion. The Standing Committee on Peace and International Security also organized a panel discussion on the theme of Criminalization of Money Laundering.
Ms. Shobha Karandalaje, MP attended the Panel discussion.
Shri Sasmit Patra, MP attended the Meeting of the Drafting Committee on the Emergency item on climate change.
Smt. Wansuk Syiem, MP attended the Workshop on the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child: Achievements and Challenges-Parliamentary perspectives on the way forward.
Smt. Snehlata Shrivastava, Secretary General, Lok Sabha and Shri Desh Deepak Verma, Secretary |General, Rajya Sabha attended the sessions of the Association of the Secretaries General of Parliaments (ASGP).
