INDIAN PARLIAMENTARY DELEGATION LED BY LOK SABHA SPEAKER ARRIVES AT SERBIAN CAPITAL BELGRADE TO PARTICIPATE IN 141ST ASSEMBLY OF THE INTER PARLIAMENTARY UNION

CAMP: BELGRADE, 13 OCTOBER 2019: The Indian Parliamentary Delegation (IPD) led by Lok Sabha Speaker Shri Om Birla arrived in Serbian capital Belgrade to attend the 141st Assembly of the Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU). The Delegation was welcomed by the Indian Ambassador to Serbia Shri S. Bhattacharya. Upon reaching Belgrade, the IPD held a review meeting, which was chaired by Shri Birla. Members of the IPD Dr. Shashi Tharoor, MP; Smt. Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, MP; Smt. Wansuk Syiem, MP; Shri Jugal Kishore Sharma, MP; Dr. Bhartiben Dhirubhai Shyal, MP; Smt. Shobha Karandlaje, MP; Shri Ram Kumar Verma, MP; Shri Sasmit Patra, MP; Smt. Snehlata Shrivastava, Secretary General, Lok Sabha, Shri Desh Deepak Verma, Secretary General, Rajya Sabha participated in the discussions. The IPU Assembly is scheduled to begin today and conclude on 17th October, 2019. The Assembly shall be attended by the Presiding Officers and Parliamentarians from 179 member states. Before the Opening Ceremony, Shri Birla held two important meetings today. He met IPU President Ms. Gabriela Cuevas Barron in which he briefed her about the working of Indian parliamentary system at length. He also shared with the IPU President about his experiences during the successful conduct of the first session of the 17th Lok Sabha. Shri Birla elucidated how the productivity of the Parliament went up to 125% in the last session of the Lok Sabha. He shared that, for the first time in Indian Parliamentary History, thirty five Bills were passed in one single session. During the day, Shri Birla also held a bilateral meeting with Speaker of the Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury. During the meeting, Shri Birla mentioned that India shares age-old cultural and civilizational bonds with Bangladesh. He referred that the two countries have shared their parliamentary experiences in the past and they are committed to deepen their bilateral relations. He invited Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury to visit India and witness the working of the Parliament of the world’s largest democracy and also meet with Indian women Parliamentarians and other young members of Parliament. In the coming days, Lok Sabha Speaker Shri Om Birla will attend many bilateral meetings with the visiting Parliamentary delegations on matters of mutual interest and for consolidating parliamentary cooperation among the member states.
