PARLIAMENTARIANS PAY TRIBUTES TO SARDAR HUKAM SINGH
New Delhi, 30 August 2019: Lok Sabha Speaker Shri Om Birla; Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Shri Ghulam Nabi Azad; Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Culture and Tourism Shri Prahalad Singh Patel and former Deputy Prime Minister Shri L. K. Advani paid floral tributes at the portrait of the former Lok Sabha Speaker, Sardar Hukam Singh in the Central Hall of Parliament House on his birth anniversary today. Among others who paid floral tributes to Sardar Hukam Singh were several Members of Parliament and former Members of Parliament. The Secretaries-General of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha Smt. Snehlata Shrivastava and Shri Desh Deepak Verma respectively also paid floral tributes. A booklet containing the profile of Sardar Hukam Singh, brought out in Hindi and English by the Lok Sabha Secretariat, was presented to the dignitaries. Sardar Hukam Singh was an eminent parliamentarian, a noted jurist, a social reformer and an able administrator. He was elected to the Constituent Assembly in April 1948; he was also a member of the Provisional Parliament (1950-52) and First, Second and Third Lok Sabha.Sardar Hukam Singh was elected as Deputy Speaker of Lok Sabha on 20 March 1956, and he was re-elected to the same office again during the Second Lok Sabha. Sardar Hukam Singh was unanimously elected as the Speaker in the Third Lok Sabha and he chaired the House from 17 April 1962 to 16 March 1967. Later, he was the Governor of Rajasthan from 1967 to 1972. Sardar Hukam Singh passed away on 27 May 1983.
