New Delhi, 03 May 2019: Lok Sabha Speaker Smt. Sumitra Mahajan reviewed the preparations for the constitution of 17th Lok Sabha in Parliament House today.
Underling that Members’ knowledge of rules and procedure of Parliament is the pre-requisite of their success as lawmakers, Smt. Mahajan emphasized that the new Members should be provided with copies of the latest Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business Lok Sabha, Directions by the Speaker and a copy of the Constitution, besides other necessary documents. Thereafter, the customized Orientation Programmes may be organized by the Secretariat to sensitize them about the different aspects of parliamentary work.
During the review, Smt. Mahajan was informed that Help Desks are being set up at the airports and at the Railway Stations (New Delhi Railway Station and Anand Vihar Railway Station) to receive the Members and to direct them to Facilitation Centre of the Parliament House. She directed that all necessary arrangements may be made at the Help Desks and transport facilities should be suitably arranged.
On being apprised about the transportation facilities for the new Members, Smt. Mahajan was happy to note that 10 new electric cars have been added and 15 new Innova cars are being procured soon by the Lok Sabha Secretariat. She hoped that the new Members would be accorded all possible assistance in getting transportation to their allotted accommodation and such other necessities as may arise in the performance of their parliamentary duties.
Smt. Mahajan was further apprised that that a Facilitation Centre is being setup in Committee Room No. 62 in Parliament House with effect from the date of announcement of Lok Sabha Election. She directed that the Members, their spouses and accompanying persons should be provided hassle-free access to the Facilitation Centre and all arrangements should be timely in place for the formalities. She also desired that arrangement for refreshments may also be made at the Facilitation Centre for the Members.
Observing that new Members, particularly the first timers, needed be properly briefed on their arrival in New Delhi, Smt. Mahajan further said that accommodation should preferably be allotted to the first time members in Western Court where 100 rooms have been earmarked for them. If need be, additional accommodation may be arranged in States Bhawans, thereby negating the need for hotel accommodation. She directed the officers to arrange a Medical Centre, Canteen and other necessary facilities in the Western Court. She also emphasized that in view of the presence of a large number of Members in the Western Court, the security arrangement should be further appropriately strengthened there.
Lok Sabha Speaker also directed that new Members and their personal staff should be provided with training facilities in computer related aspects, including Members Portal, e-Office, FMS etc. This apart, the Website of Lok Sabha should be suitably updated and the data pertaining to the 16th Lok Sabha may be archived as per the existing rules. She also desired that LSTV and DD should make arrangements for running a scroll in Hindi and English regarding the arrangements being made for the Members at different places.
