New Delhi, 22 October 2018: Lok Sabha Speaker Smt. Sumitra Mahajan welcomed Her Excellency Ms. Marija Pejcinovic Buric, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign and European Affairs Minister of Croatia and her Delegation in the Parliament House today and said that India’s relationship with Croatia is warm and friendly and both the countries need to engage more purposely in times to come.
Smt. Mahajan observed that lawmakers should have a sound knowledge base to effectively deal with issues of critical concern and the Speaker’s Research Initiative (SRI) has been working to fulfill this mandate. She mentioned that domain experts are invited by SRI regularly under the interactive sessions to share their experiences and knowledge, which allow the Members of Parliament to understand, analyze and deliberate on issues in a more informed and proactive manner. She was happy to note that SRI, during the last three years, has contributed immensely in assisting Members in performing their roles in law making and oversight of Government, etc more effectively.
Smt. Mahajan informed that Parliament of India has started an Internship Scheme which engages young students to learn about various aspects of parliamentary work, particularly about the committee system, legislative process. Smt. Mahajan also referred to the ambitious e-Parliament programme, which has been launched in a big way in Indian Parliament.
In response, Her Excellency Mrs. Marija Pejcinovic Buric hoped that the ongoing visit would further strengthen bilateral relationship. She also extended an invitation to Lok Sabha Speaker, to visit Croatia at a convenient date.
