LOK SABHA SPEAKER INAUGURATES THE NORTH EAST CHAPTER OF SPEAKERíS RESEARCH INITIATIVE Guwahati, 8 October 2018: Lok Sabha Speaker, Smt. Sumitra Mahajan today inaugurated the North East Chapter of Speakerís Research Initiative (SRI) on the side lines of the 17th Annual Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) India Region, Zone-III Conference in Guwahati. Inaugurating the SRI North East Chapter, Smt. Mahajan said that it is important for the Legislators and Parliamentarians to be equipped with authentic and up-to-date information on critical issues of governance so as to reflect the hopes and aspirations of the people on the floor of the House. Smt. Mahajan shared that the SRI was established in the Lok Sabha in July 2015 with a view to focus on identifying core areas of long term, strategic policy; to generate high level research inputs; and to arrange interaction of Members of Parliament with domain experts for information dissemination and capacity building. The popularity of SRI has even reached beyond the shores of India, she added. Smt. Mahajan informed that the Presiding Officers of North Eastern States had passed the Imphal Resolution in 2017 urging to have a chapter of SRI based at Guwahati. The actualization of SRI North East Chapter would provide an opportunity to Legislators and policy makers of North East to find out acceptable solutions to the vexed issues and to take the region on the path of rapid development. The working sessions on (i) Skill Development for Sustainable Growth of Organic Farming in North East Region; and (ii) Connectivity for Economic Development of North East Region would be taken up for discussion during the Conference. Earlier, in her Inaugural Address, Smt. Mahajan said that the North-East occupies a pride of place in our country and is one of the most diverse regions of Asia and a meeting point of many communities, faiths and cultures. The entire North-East has been richly endowed with the bounties of nature and blessed with a rich and composite cultural heritage. Thus, while safeguarding the distinctive ethnic and cultural identity of the people of the North-East, it is equally important to bring about emotional integration between the people of the North-East and the rest of the country. Further, the connectivity of the North East by roads, railways and airports would greatly enhance the growth potential of this resourceful region. Appreciating the significant contribution of the women of the North East in various fields, Smt. Mahajan highlighted the achievements of Boxer M.C. Mary Kom, Gymanst Deepa Karmakar, Weightlifter Kunjarani Devi and young Athlete Hima Das. The two-day Conference will conclude tomorrow.
