LOK SABHA SPEAKER LEADS INDIAN PARLIAMENTARY DELEGATION TO EIGHTH CONFERENCE OF ASSOCIATION OF SAARC SPEAKERS AND PARLIAMENTARIANS IN COLOMBO, SRI LANKA
New Delhi, 02 October 2017 : The 8th Conference of the Association of SAARC Speakers and Parliamentarians will be held in Colombo from 4 – 6 October, 2017. Parliament of Sri Lanka will host the event. Lok Sabha Speaker Smt. Sumitra Mahajan is leading an Indian Parliamentary Delegation to the Conference. Speakers and delegates from the SAARC countries will attend the Conference. The Agenda Topics of the Conference are as follows: i) “Association of the SAARC Speakers and Parliamentarians” a platform for the Parliamentarians of South Asia to work together to reach the 2030 agenda for Sustainable Development; ii) Promoting Parliamentary Diplomacy and Open Parliament in the age of digitalization; iii) SAARC Parliamentarians’ role in preserving Cultural and Archaeological Heritage in South Asia Region; iv) Support Women to upheave themselves from poverty and build better future for their communities; v) Countering violent extremism among youth to prevent terrorism and empowering youth to combat human trafficking, modern slavery and illegal trafficking in drugs. The Young Parliamentarians Committee Meeting will be held for the first time in the event. Smt. Mahajan will deliver the lead speech on the topic “Association of the SAARC Speakers and Parliamentarians” a platform for the Parliamentarians of South Asia to work together to reach the 2030 agenda for Sustainable Development. Smt. Mahajan will also attend the Special Parliamentary Session of Sri Lanka to celebrate the occasion of 70th Anniversary of the establishment of Parliament of Sri Lanka. The Inaugural Ceremony of the Conference will be attended by H E. Mr. Maithripala Sirisena, the President of Sri Lanka and Hon’ble Mr. Ranil Wickremsinghe, the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka.
