New Delhi, 8 March 2018: Welcoming a parliamentary delegation from Republic of Korea (RoK) led by Hon’ble Mr. Chung Se-kyun, Speaker of National Assembly of RoK in Parliament House today, Lok Sabha Speaker Smt. Sumitra Mahajan said that India cherishes historical ties of friendship with Republic of Korea. She observed that with 'Look East' policy evolving into an 'Act East' policy, the region has gained even greater importance in India's strategic thinking and economic engagement. She noted based on shared values and interests, India-RoK Special Strategic Partnership has grown stronger in recent years. On parliamentary cooperation between the two countries, Smt. Mahajan said that India and RoK have a healthy tradition of parliamentary exchanges and Parliament of India looks forward to sustaining this momentum. She fondly recalled her own visit to RoK in September 2016, during which she had very productive discussions with Speaker Chung. She informed the visiting delegation that Parliament of India have constituted an India-RoK Parliamentary Friendship Group, bringing together members from diverse political parties. This shows that India-RoK relationship enjoys all party support in our two parliaments, she added. Referring to the potential of bilateral economic engagement, Smt. Mahajan said that India looks forward to new partnerships with RoK in areas of common interest. She invited investors and entrepreneurs from RoK to join their Indian counterparts in the 'Make in India” initiative of Government of India. She also felt that Rok could be valuable partner in programmes for skills development, Make in India, Digital India, Smart Cities etc. She informed the RoK delegation that India's highly skilled young manpower, huge market and strength in IT software combined with Korean technology, industrial experience and capital are a winning combination. Smt. Mahajan observed that there is great potential for new area of cooperation between India and RoK such as in the fields of defence and new technologies. In response, Hon’ble Mr. Chung Se-kyun, Speaker of National Assembly of RoK thanked Lok Sabha Speaker for the excellent hospitality extended to his delegation. He hoped that Indo-Republic of Korea friendship would be further strengthened in times to come.
