LOK SABHA SPEAKER EMPHASIZES STRONG RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN INDIA AND RUSSIA
Lok Sabha Speaker Smt. Sumitra Mahajan had a bilateral meeting with Mr. Vyacheslav Volodin, Chairman of the Russian State Duma on the margins of the 137th Session of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) which is underway in St. Petersburg, Russia. The two Speakers had a very pleasant interaction where Smt. Mahajan thanked Russia for receiving a delegation of the Indian Parliament in Russia in July 2017 and giving her the honour and opportunity to address the State Duma, the Lower House of the Russian Parliament which is equavalent to the Lok Sabha of India. Mr. Volodin thanked Smt. Mahajan for participating with a large delegation headed by her in the IPU Session in St. Petersburg. Both sides confirmed having constituted their respective Parliamentary Friendship Groups. Smt. Mahajan informed Mr. Volodin that Smt. Hema Malini, a Member of the Lok Sabha and a popular celebrity in Russia as well is a member of the Parliamentary Friendship Group of India for Russia.
The two sides agreed that the recent visits of the Head of Government level between the two countries followed by these recent interactions between the Speakers of the Houses of the two countries auger well for the further strengthening of the already strong and enduring relationship between the two countries. Smt. Mahajan thanked Russia once again its support for India’s membership of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. Smt. Mahajan informed Mr. Volodin that India is planning to have a number of events to celebrate the 70th year of the bilateral relations between the two countries. It is planned to have a 'Raisina Dialogue' during the forthcoming visit of the Russian Parliamentary delegation to India where the Chairpersons of the Culture and Science Committees of the Russian Parliament have been invited. Mr. Volodin thanked her for the plans afoot for the visit of the Russian Parliamentary delegation and agreed to soon decide the dates of the visit by mutual consultation.
