ĎSENIOR CITIZENS NEED ENABLING ATMOSPHERE TO LIVE WITH DIGNITYí, SAYS LOK SABHA SPEAKER

New Delhi, 14 December 2016: Lok Sabha Speaker, Smt. Sumitra Mahajan released the book titled 'Walking into Twilight with Dignity : Need for a legal frame for Geriatric Care', authored by veteran Parliamentarian Shri Bhartruhari Mahtab, Chairperson, Railway Convention Committee, in Parliament Library Building today. Highlighting the issues affecting elderly people, Smt. Mahajan said that they need enabling atmosphere to live with dignity and Shri Mahtabís book is a timely endeavour to highlight the sensitive issues concerning them. Shri Mahtabís book provides a direction to the Government to reorient their strategies for the welfare of senior citizens who are in need of affection and dignity, she felt. Smt. Mahajan urged the fellow Parliamentarians to raise issues of senior citizens positively and with a sense of positive sensibility. In this regard, she praised Shri Mahtabís erudite and timely interventions in the House and hoped that his book would help the parliamentarian to appreciate the issue in question in a better manner. Shri J. P. Nadda, Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, praised Shri Mahtab for his inspiring work. He reiterated his commitment for better health and other facilities for elderly people. Members of Parliament, former Members of Parliament and several other dignitaries graced the occasion. The author Shri Bhartruhari Mahtab thanked Lok Sabha Speaker Smt. Sumitra Mahajan and other dignitaries for their gracious presence. He referred to his efforts to provide a voice to the problems being faced by the elderly people through The Senior Citizens (Provision of Geriatric and Dementia Care) Bill, 2013 (no. 77 of 2013) which was introduced by him in the Lok Sabha as Private Membersí Bill on 3 May 2013. He hoped that the Government would intensify its efforts to provide for care for senior citizens suffering from dementia and severe geriatric disorders and set up adequate and accessible geriatric care facilities to address the problems of the rising number of senior citizens.
